Third Friday Presents Shivered Timbers: The Royal Navy's Breaking Point

In the mid-18th Century, the hayday of wooden sailing ships, having access to acres of mature forest was crucial for a nation to build and maintain a navy. Competition for North American forest resources came to a peak during the American Revolution, and the outcome shaped the future settlement of the Great Lakes. Chicago Maritime Museum board member and historian William Derrah will take us through these events and weave our nation's military and environmental history together. Bill is a long-time paddler and sailor of Chicago's waterways and is an expert in the history of the Old Northwest.

The November 20 presentation is $5 for members and $10 for non-members, and includes Bites & Beverages, the museum’s volunteer-operated hospitality service, which begins at 6:30. Seating is limited, so reserve your place today. Virtual seats are also available with a live connection to the Q&A that follows. This lecture is held in conjunction with Bridgeport Art Center's Third Friday Open Studios. Please consider joining CMM for an annual family membership of $35 to enjoy unlimited visits, access to the monthly newsletter and discounted tickets to special events.
